Finally, after years of City permit denials - the 2008 6th Annual Da Hui Backdoor Shootout is back on track, and today started Day 1 in style!
With EPIC 6-8ft occ.10ft from the WNW - all surfers/teams from Da Hui, Quiksilver, Hurley, Volcom, No Fear, Oakley, Red Bull & Billabong were ready to seize the surf. Jamie O'Brien took an early lead riding some of the best Pipe waves many have seen all Winter! However, by mid-afternoon, surf began to build up to 12-15ft breaking at 3rd reef. With surf like this, surfers had a challenge paddling out to the line up. Many were jumping in at Backdoor ending up at Ehukai in seconds. Surfers had to come back out from the water and hurry up to their starting positions and try again.
Rounds 1 & 2 were completed today with Jamie O'Brien in the lead with Nathan Fletcher, Kalani Chapman and Mark Healy not to far behind. Although, this is the Shootout - so it's any surfer's game....stay tuned.
Contest pending for Thursday 1/10 as surf is expected to be pretty big in the 10-15ft range with possibly bigger sets pounding through.
